History of the house

The Glen Park House was built in 1920 in the Tudor Revival architectural style, which was in vogue in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th century. Over the past century, the house was used for a variety of purposes. It originally served as a private family home but was later used as rental apartments, a doctor’s office and more recently as two bed and breakfasts: the Clarke House Bed & Breakfast (1988-2003) and the Tudor Rose Bed & Breakfast (2004-2021).

The hospitality roots of the house run deep. The house was built over land once occupied by the Glen Park Hotel (1860s-1919). With its 4 stories and 120 rooms, the Glen Park Hotel was the largest hotel in town and occupied the entire block between 12th Street and Durland Place (once called 13th Street). The hotel was one of several grand summer resorts in Watkins Glen built in the 19th century. Visitors flocked to Watkins Glen from around the world to marvel at the natural wonders of what is now the Watkins Glen State Park, located a couple of blocks away from the house.

The house has undergone extensive remodeling since it was acquired in October 2021. The owners strived to modernize the house while preserving many of its original features. To commemorate the house’s historical roots, the owners named it The Glen Park House, a nod to the hotel that once stood on the land.
